Hand guards for the Honda CRF300L

Hand guards for the Honda CRF300L

Which hand guards do I recommend for the Honda CRF300L?

Let me start by saying that this is NOT a sponsored article. What you see here is my experience as a motorcyclist spending my own money. I have installed these hand guards by myself and also crashed and dropped my motorcycle many times with it. Not only have I used these particular hand guards with the Honda CRF300L but also with other motorcycles.

From all the experience and research I have done far, I’m sticking with Barkbusters. Yes, there are cheaper options. However, you will quickly realise via the feedback from other users in forums that they are not as resistant. If you have already seen Barkbusters by yourself you know what I’m talking about. If you haven’t, give it a try. They are SOLID.

Very important for me. This model is guaranteed to fit and is made specifically for the Honda CRF300L in its stock format.

The recommended model

The correct Barkbusters Handguards for the Honda CRF300L is:

  • Hardware mounting kit code: BHG-091
  • I recommend JET Plastic Guards –Code: JET-003-RD

Removal of the original hand guards

The removal of the original hand guards is not hard but it involves many steps. You can hardly damage anything or do something wrong. However, if you would would like a step by step visual instruction just follow the video along.

Tips for the installation

The leaflet provided with the product makes the installation almost 100% clear, however the adaptation required on the hand grips and throttle tube could be more clear.

Follow the video and consider the hints listed below.

You need to use a box cutter to create an opening that gives access to the internal throttle tube. The diameter of this opening MUST be bigger than the aluminium spacer included with the Barkbusters hand guards.

Notice that the aluminium spacer sits inside the newly created opening without touching its internal diameter. Make a neat cut! It should be as smooth as possible.

Now using your hands, roll the end of the handgrip inside out and then, using a hack saw, cut the throttle tube exposing 1 to 2 mm of the handlebar.

At this stage mount the hand guards on your CRF300L without giving the final torque. You will notice that the aluminium bar makes a slight contact with the outer edge of the handgrip. Once again, use the box cutter to trim the edges of the hand grip that are making contact with the aluminium bar. Your goal is to ensure that the throttle tube can operate freely at all times and positions.

The left side is much easier since there is no need to consider the throttle tube. Simply cut an opening for the aluminium spacer and you are done.

The installation shouldn’t take longer than 1 hour following this guide and the step by step video on Youtube.

Hi Herbert,

Yes, I have the Protaper CR High (not the tapered version) and the correct Barkbusters BHG 151.

However, there is a lot more to consider! Careful not to make some other mistakes.
I recommend you to watch this video:

Hallo,
du hast den Originallenker der CRF 300 L gegen einen Protaper CR high getauscht. Welche Barkbuster Handschützer passen zu dem Protaper? Kannst du mir einen Rat geben?
Viele Grüße
Herbert
